  1. I think it's really interesting how the club Olympiacos has issues going on, yet the GBF also has issues and controversy around them. This is interesting because one would think that they would have worked together to be accused of these issues. However, because of the issues both the GBF and Ollympiacos have issues with each other. This is quite interesting.

    1. Hi Charlie, In the case of Olympiacos and the GBF, it's unfortunate that their issues with each other have become public and have caused controversy. Hopefully, they can find a way to resolve their differences and move forward in a positive direction for the benefit of the sport and its fans.

  2. I have never heard of a club that followed a non-profit organization model. I'm not sure how they manage to not take away an revenues from the program and if that is sustainable for a team that just relies on investors. Obviously in the NBA they have a franchise model that operates very differently than that of Olympiacos. Are there any other teams in the EuroLeague that also follow this structure?

    1. Thanks for sharing, Connor. While it's not common for professional sports teams to operate as non-profit organizations, it's not unheard of either. The Green Bay Packers, for example, operate as a non-profit organization and are owned by their fans. It's unclear how Olympiacos specifically manages to sustain themselves while not taking away revenues, but it's possible that they rely on a combination of investor support, sponsorships, and other forms of revenue generation. It's also worth noting that while the franchise model may be more common in the NBA, many European soccer teams also operate as non-profit organizations or as member-owned clubs.

  3. Maximizing revanues in the United States is imperitive to being a well run organization, regardless of team performance. So being a non-profit entity, as well as having shady ownership tactics, leads me to believe their is something shady that may be occuring behind the scenes. To make matters worse, it seems the Greek Basketball Federation is either in on these shady practices, or to inept to act. For a club of so much history, a new ownership model should be explored in my opinion.

  4. It's really interesting that the club follows a non-profit style of ownership. However, the rumblings of all these scandals are definitely very concerning. There should not be a team having influence over the decisions that the league they are in makes. Additionally, I think its also concerning how a small minority of the members board has a bigger influence than the rest. I think that this could lead to decisions in the direction of profit instead of the success of the basketball team.

    1. Strong insights, Luke. This might address some of your comments.

While maximizing revenues is certainly important for any professional sports organization, it's not necessarily incompatible with a non-profit structure. As for concerns about shady ownership tactics, it's difficult to say without more information or evidence to support such claims. It's important for any organization, regardless of ownership structure, to operate ethically and transparently. If there are issues with the current ownership model, exploring alternative models may indeed be worth considering.

  5. I find this style of ownership quite interesting, especially because it has caused so much controversy. I don't know much about the ownership structures in the NBA but I can imagine they are quite different. I did see in another comment you mentioned the Green Bay Packers being a non-profit organization, which was my initial thought when reading this article because I am from Wisconsin.

  6. The amount of controversy around the ownership model of the team is definitely a bit concerning to me. It's really interesting that the team is non-profit, because I have never heard of that before. I think these controversies should definitely be looked into further, because a lack of transparency at the managerial level is not a good sign.

  7. I am wondering why they continue to use this model if it brings in so much controversy? The ownership structure in the NBA is very different. There aren't really any non-profit run organizations. The only one that I have heard of is the Packers, where the community owns the team.

    1. With all ownership models can come controversy. In the long run this model seems to keep the fans most loyal and engaged.

  8. Olympiacos ownership structure as a non-profit with a board of directors is very interesting because that is so different than NBA ownership structures. Most, if not all, NBA teams are heavily profit focused and owned by one individual. I believe having a board provides them with a unique advantage because they will not be making key decisions based on just one persons thoughts and ideas.

  9. It is interesting to me how the owners OPBC are known for its strong commitment to community yet somehow is still under controversy. The fact that it is a small group of individuals making decisions for the club doesn't seem to reflect as a strong community-focused ownership. With all this conflict of interest it will be interesting to see how Olympiaco and its owners maintain their reputation and relationship.

  10. The ownership structure of Olympiacos Basketball Team, which is owned by a non-profit organization run by a board of directors, differs from the ownership structures used in the NBA. In the NBA, teams are typically owned by wealthy individuals or groups of investors who purchase the franchise and operate it as a for-profit business.

  11. I think Olympiacos' ownership model is quite interesting in that it leads to a loyal fanbase and unique identity for the club, but it also leads to controversy regarding ownership and team-related decisions which differs heavily from the NBA's profit-generating model. I'm very interested to see how this situation plays out and the consequences that these controversies will create, both good and bad.

  12. I find it very interesting how you find Mark Cuban owning an NBA team along with many other notable billionaires compared to this structure, which is polar opposite. This model certainly results in passionate loyalty to the club and think there are elements that NBA teams could consider with how they run their clubs financially.

  13. I really admire the non-profit ownership of Olympiacos. In the NBA, teams are owned by Billionaires only looking to turn a profit on their investments. This ownership model is definitely a lot more community-focused which is the way all ownership models should be.

  14. (IN RESPONSE TO NUMEROUS COMMENTS) Thank you all for the insightful comments.

After further analysis it can be concluded that the presence of controversy likely spurs from the balancing act of remaining as transparent as possible, maximizing return to key stakeholders, and running a non-profit.
